  • Cook time: 10 min
  • Total time: 25 min
  • Servings: 2 sandwiches
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Estimated cost per serving: $4.00

Ingredients

  • 1 12-inch loaf Cuban bread or 2 soft baguette-style rolls
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 6 oz (170 g) sliced roast pork
  • 4 oz (115 g) sliced ham
  • 4 oz (115 g) Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced dill pickles
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Split the bread lengthwise and spread mustard over both cut sides.
  2. Layer the roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles evenly. Close and cut into two sandwiches.
  3. Spread a thin layer of butter over the outside of the bread.
  4. Heat a griddle or skillet over medium. Add the sandwiches and weigh them down with a press or heavy skillet.
  5. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
  6. Rest for 1 minute, then slice each sandwich diagonally.

Tips and variations

  • Do not overheat the griddle; the cheese needs time to melt.
  • Salami belongs to the Tampa variation; Miami-style Cubans generally omit it.
