Ingredients
- 1 12-inch loaf Cuban bread or 2 soft baguette-style rolls
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 6 oz (170 g) sliced roast pork
- 4 oz (115 g) sliced ham
- 4 oz (115 g) Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced dill pickles
- 1 tablespoon softened butter
Step-by-step instructions
- Split the bread lengthwise and spread mustard over both cut sides.
- Layer the roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles evenly. Close and cut into two sandwiches.
- Spread a thin layer of butter over the outside of the bread.
- Heat a griddle or skillet over medium. Add the sandwiches and weigh them down with a press or heavy skillet.
- Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- Rest for 1 minute, then slice each sandwich diagonally.
Tips and variations
- Do not overheat the griddle; the cheese needs time to melt.
- Salami belongs to the Tampa variation; Miami-style Cubans generally omit it.
