Ingredients

  • 6 large slices sandwich bread or white bread, crusts removed
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 6 thin slices cooked ham
  • 6 thin slices cheese
  • 1 hard-boiled egg, thinly sliced, optional
  • Tender lettuce leaves, thoroughly dried, optional

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Mix the butter and mayonnaise. Lightly flatten the bread with a rolling pin if thick.
  2. Spread a thin layer all the way to the edges of each slice.
  3. Top two slices with ham and cheese; add egg or lettuce if desired. Cover with the remaining bread.
  4. Wrap in a barely damp towel and chill for 10 minutes under a light cutting board.
  5. Trim the edges if needed and cut each sandwich into four neat triangles.

  • Keep unused bread covered while working so it does not dry out.
